LIMA Local authorities are looking for a Mexican man in connection with the kidnapping and rape of a 9-year-old girl in Hamilton.
Allen County Sheriff's investigators learned that Alfredo Cruz was spotted in Lima as late as Tuesday. Authorities believe he still may be in Lima since he does not have a car, said Investigator Mark Pierce of Crime Stoppers.
Cruz is described as 5-foot 5-inches tall, 130 pounds, in his early 20s and speaks broken English. He uses numerous aliases and Cruz may not be his real name. He is believed to be an illegal alien from Mexico, Pierce said. He has a bird tattooed on his forearm.
Hamilton police detectives traced Cruz to Lima through phone calls. In one of the calls, Cruz contacted someone in Hamilton from a phone in Lima. Detectives from the Hamilton Police Department, Butler County Sheriff's Office and local law enforcement officers hit the streets this week in Lima, showing pictures to various people in the local Hispanic community. Several people said they saw Cruz, Pierce said.
Cruz is accused of abducting a 9-year-old girl who lived across the street from him in Hamilton on June 19. He snatched the girl and her bike, took the girl and her bike inside his house then raped her, Pierce said.
After the rape, Cruz passed out and the girl escaped. Based on the fact she could identify Cruz and that he took her bike, police believed he had plans to kill her, Pierce said.
Investigators believe Cruz may be staying with someone from the local Hispanic community, possibly someone he knows from Mexico, Pierce said.
Anyone with information on Cruz's whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 419-229-7867. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if the information provided leads to an arrest.
